Have you ever wondered what happens to all your recycling efforts? Will the coke bottle you recycled yesterday get turned into a t-shirt?

The recycling process is actually pretty long winded and complicated! It involves a lot of sorting, cleaning, and melting before it can be reused. Let's get started, shall we?

Most recycling centers use what is known as a single stream recycling system. That is, all recyclable goods including plastic, metal, glass, paper are collected all at once. These different types of recyclable goods must first get sorted.

Unlike recycling glass, metal, and paper which is pretty straight forward, plastics must be further sorted by plastic types (that is PP, PE, ABS, PET, etc…). This is because some plastic types cannot be melted with each other due to differing melting points and properties. If two plastic types are melted together, the resulting mixture is usually weak in structure and will solidify in layers (like oil and water). Therefore, mixed plastic types cannot be efficiently used for product manufacturing.

In fact, most recycling centers only take two types of plastic products, commonly type 1 PET plastic and type 2 HDPE plastic. The plastic numbers are usually found imprinted at the bottom of plastic products. This is the number inside the recycle symbol (three circulating arrows). Before sending any plastic to the recycling center, make sure you do a little research. If you send a recycling facility something they do not handle, it may end up in landfills.

Now that we have the plastic sorted by type, depending on the recycling facility, it may end up being further sorted by colors. Clear, natural, and white colored plastic is always the most desirable because it can be dyed to produce other colored plastics. For example, if you have a load of green plastics, it cannot be changed to blue. If you have a mixed colored lot, it usually gets dyed to produce black plastic products.

As the sorting process is very labor intensive, after the plastic is sorted by type, it is usually packaged and shipped to Asian countries for processing.

The plastic must now be washed to remove any residual sodas or juice. Let's follow how the common coke bottle is cleaned. While the coke bottle itself is made from PET (or PETE), the bottle cap and label is made from a different plastic type, PP or PE. Luckily, both PP and PE has densities less than 1 and will float in water. PET, when placed in water, will sink. When the bottle shreds are placed in a tank of water and mixed around, the plastic floating at the top is PP or PE and is manually removed. The bottom layer is PET and will move onto the next step.

While water takes care of partially cleaning the plastic, it must now be cleaned using a corrosive solution to remove any glues or chemicals. We now have a sorted and cleaned batch of plastic shreds which are placed in large dryers to remove moisture. At this time, the flakes are either sold or transported to another location for production into plastic pellets or nurdles (as pictured above).

Plastic pellets are the raw materials required for product manufacturing. One thing to note is that recycled plastics are never as versatile or "good" once it is reused. Recycled plastics are therefore usually "downcycled" into other products. That is, old milk bottles never get to make new ones, instead they are made into a different product all together such as toys.

Often times, recycled plastic is sold to manufacturers that mix recycled materials with virgin material to produce products. This way, they can ensure the finished product to be high in quality while saving (money) the environment.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/environment-articles/how-is-plastic-recycled-4355656.html

About the Author

I'm a plastic trader and processor and have more than 5 years experience working in the plastic recycling business in China.

Recently, I started a new blog, Recycled Plastic dot com, that covers my knowledge and experience in this field.

Recycled Plastic do com covers the latest news, stories, trends, products and resources relating to plastic and plastic recycling. It brings awareness to how plastic waste is endangering and poisoning our environment and steps we can take to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
3 reasons to reuse your tissue paper and paper packaging

1) As pressure on the environment and the need for the nation to economise grows, it’s now critical to conserve and reuse packaging.

2) Reusing packaging is the best form of recycling, because it doesn’t require further use of energy, either in converting or transporting the packaging prior to use. It simply extends the life of your paper packaging.

3) Thinking ahead to how your customer receives their parcel or gift, reducing unnecessary packaging and making it easy for the customer to reuse their tissue paper, or other paper packaging, could have a positive impact on your environmental credentials

“As a specialist packaging supplies company we believe we have a duty to encourage Customers to give greater thought to the packaging they buy and make better use of the packaging materials they retain.”

How to reuse your tissue and other paper gift packaging

Initially, avoid contact with self adhesive tape where possible, as this will tear the tissue paper

Ideally wrap or fold tissue paper around the item and place within a cardboard box without sticking the tissue paper together. Elastic bands, string or ribbon can be used instead of adhesive packaging tape to encourage reuse of paper packaging

When unpacking items wrapped in tissue paper, try to avoid ripping the paper and flatten sheets where possible

Like wrapping paper and other forms of gift packaging, tissue paper can be reused if it is in good condition

If the tissue paper has become creased or ripped, you could scrunch it up loosely to fill voids and provide cushioning protection within boxes

Alternatively, tissue paper and other gift wrap can be shredded to make attractive gift packaging and paper loose fill

Once your tissue paper or other paper gift packaging is no longer usable, it can be recycled along with other waste paper.

Alternatively, you may wish to pass on used, clean paper packaging to schools for art projects. Many schools and nurseries might buy cheap tissue paper online or direct from UK packaging suppliers, and if you can pass your packaging on it might save your local school money and also help to conserve energy and natural resources.

For more information about buying tissue paper, gift wrap and other paper packaging, why not visit the Davpack online packaging superstore, or call 01332 821 200 and speak to one of our packaging experts…....we can even give you tips on reusing or saving on packaging materials.
About the Author:

Kevin Thomas works for Davpack, a uk packaging supplier. You have already replaced it, but now what do you do? What options are there for disposing of your old computer in a safe and environmentally friendly way? The answer is computer recycling.

Why Recycling Computers Is Important

Computers and other consumer electronics items make up around two percent of all of the materials in today's landfills. We already know that recycling in general is important, as the landfills are not getting any smaller, but recycling computers and monitors is especially important. These items contain lead and toxic metals that can cause serious damage to the environment, particularly if they end up in the water supply.

Additionally, your computer contains personal information that you may not know how to completely remove. You do not want a computer guru finding it in the dumpster and taking your personal information off of it. This can lead to identity theft and a lifetime of problems.

Advantages of Recycling Your Computer

Recycling your computer responsibly carries many benefits. First, by working with a responsible recycler, you are ensured that your personal information is completely removed from the machine. This will protect you from dumpster divers who are just waiting to find a hard drive to tap into.

Another benefit of recycling your computer is the fact that you will be doing your part to protect the environment. You will be keeping the toxins that are in your computer out of the landfills and away from the water supply. Additionally, the precious metals and other materials used in these electronics must be mined, which takes a tremendous toll on the environment. By recycling your computer, you ensure that these precious materials are reused, reducing the amount that must be removed from the earth through costly mining efforts.

In many cases a recycled computer can actually be put to use again. Even if a major part of your computer is broken, there are other components that can be used to rebuild other computers. This can provide an affordable computer for an individual or organization that otherwise would not be able to access one. Often these computers are donated to charitable organizations, so in this way you could be helping the community simply by recycling your broken computer. When you choose a recycling center, choose one that works closely with a charitable organization.

How Computer Recycling Works

The first step in a responsible computer recycling program is wiping all information off of the computer's hard drive. This ensures that your finances and personal information are protected. Then, the recycling program should look at the machine to see if there are any usable components. These are harvested to be used to build new machines. Any non-usable parts are broken down into their basic components, such as metal or plastic, and further processed.

The recycling center will then take these basic components and organize them according to the type they are. These parts will then be sent to a smelting facility to be turned into tiny pieces and melted to be made into other things. For instance, plastic can be melted and used again in another computer or for a completely different plastic item. As part of this process, the precious metals that are in circuit boards are extracted for reuse. This keeps them out of the environment.

Today, only 18 percent of all computers and other consumer electronics that have reached the end of their lives are recycled. This means that 1.84 million tons of this type of waste ends up in the landfills. By recycling your old computer, you can ensure that you do not add to this sad statistic.
About the Author:
Renting computers is the best option in any business, event, and trade show needs. Most materials can be recycled, although harder substances may cost more to process, making their re-use inefficient. Paper, plastic, glass, tin, and many textiles are all relatively easy to process for recycling. Despite the similarity in purpose and process, when organic materials such as foods and plants are re-used the process is known as composting rather than recycling.

Recycling is done for a number of reasons, the most obvious of which is to reduce the amount of natural resources which are consumed for new products. It is also done to save energy, prevent water and air pollution, and to prevent the build up of garbage and the proliferation of landfills.

If recycling were a perfectly efficient process you would be able to take old wasted products, and convert them into the same amount of the same product, only unused. However, there is an energy expenditure that is used when processing recycled materials, which can drive up the cost of manufacturing certain goods. That is why high end materials such as paper and pencils are often turned into lower grade recycled materials such as cardboard.

Salvage is another form of recycling, in which valuable substances or components of a used product are reclaimed without actually reusing the rest of the product. This is done with the lead found in batteries, as well as the gold parts that are found in computer chips.

While recycling is considered to be a method for reducing waste and preserving the health of the natural world, opponents claim that it is actually a wasteful process that uses up more resources than it produces. These criticisms are often specifically targeted at state mandated recycling initiative. However, even if the cost of production is higher it may be justified due to the cost of maintaining the product in a landfill after it is used.

About the Author:

This article was written by Joey Pebble, one of the artists who produces natural stone home décor products for http://PebbleZ.com – These products are all produced from real pieces of the natural earth, quarried, cut and refined into a series of elegant and sophisticated home accessories.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/recycling-articles/recycling-defined-799735.html

83% Believe Retailers Should Stop Giving Away Free Plastic Bags
Author: Chris Amos

4 out of 5 Britons believe supermarkets should stop giving away free plastic bags according to a new poll.

Following last week’s move by The Welsh Assembly Government aiming to introduce a ban on free plastic bags, over 70% of the general public want the Government to impose a charge on plastic bags given by retailers to encourage shoppers to switch to reusable ones instead.

A hefty 69% believe the current promise by retailers to reduce the number of bags given away by 50% by the end of spring 2010 is not enough.

82% of people believe a 10p-15p charge on plastic bags would encourage consumers to change to reusable bags while 92% are concerned with the impact the current plastic bags available from retailers have on our environment.

The Welsh Assembly Environment Minister Jane Davidson has asked officials to start work on the necessary legislation to introduce a ban on giving away free plastic bans.

“When we look at other countries in the world we understand why countries from Italy to Australia are now imposing charges and even banning plastic bags,” she said. “That experience around the world has told us that the most effective way to meet our aspirations on plastic bags is with regulations.”

Chris Amos from eco-bags company, Reusabags said:

“Support for a ban on giving away plastic bags is now greater than ever. You have to serve the majority and find products that a large group of people are going to want to purchase because they will be purchasing them at a much higher price than their local retail store. Most fundraising activities don’t take into account health concerns or dieting and most are not environmentally friendly. However, there are many fundraising parents who are frustrated with the fact that fundraisers pinch their pockets, theirs stomachs and the environment. Why can’t we purchase items that are healthy, unique and that will help us go green?
Go green fundraising items are a great way to sell something your friends and neighbors may actually be able to use. Some of the exciting items include reusable shopping bags – you could put your school logo right on the bag and then you’d be supporting and advertising for the child you support. Other items may include pens or paper made with recycled paper. These items abound even in retail stores and are becoming vastly popular. Another great idea might be bread or other health foods like trail mix, power bars or similar items. Bread is something most people are consuming on a regular basis so it would be easy to support those types of fundraising activities.

Along with recycled items, reusable items and health foods, school fundraisers could incorporate things like live plants or trees. Several programs online offer live tree fundraising and live bulb fundraising. Not only do these types of items support a school group, they are a great way to beautify the world. You could do the fundraiser in several different ways, depending on the type of group participating in the fundraising activity and depending on the people that are going to be buying the product. First, you could have people purchase the item and then you deliver it to them and they are free to plant the tree or flower bulb in their own yard. However, you could also design a program so that you have a person buy a flower bulb or tree that is planted at the school, church or community place. This can then be a reminder of how that individual helped out the school. You could even have a day where everyone who purchased a flower or tree comes down and helps with the planting and beautification. This might be a fantastic way of getting more community involvement and it also gives people some pride and ownership as well.

When planning your next fundraising activity consider looking online and choosing a go green fundraiser. As more people become sensitive to the environment and their health, it is going to be imperative that school fundraisers accommodate people’s changing habits and needs. In order to continue to reach the biggest majority of people it will be essential to adapt some of the products. We can all count on cookie dough and wrapping paper fundraisers. However, make your mark by trying something a little different. Go green fundraising can make an impact on people’s lives and in people’s communities. Through reusable products, recycled items, health food products and live plants or trees, you can make a big difference in fundraising. Next time you need to go knock on a door or bring a fundraising sheet to work you’ll be bringing in items that might just catch people’s attention.

About the Author: Rebecca Beckett is a freelance writer for Innuity. When you think that an average 8 million nappies are thrown away every day in the UK alone! That works out at nearly 3 billion nappies each year. Around 7.5 million of the daily 8 million nappies will go to landfill but the rest, unfortunately, could end up littering the streets or thrown into the sea which are all too common scenes. A disposable nappy has over twice the environmental impact of a reusable nappy and with the use of an A rated washing machine and environmentally friendly washing detergents; this can be improved even greater.

There are many other reasons why reusable nappies are a good idea. Firstly, and what is so often on the minds of parents is cost. Reusable, cotton nappies can save in the region of £600 over using disposable nappies. Money can be saved further should another child come along as the same cloth nappies can be used.

Cotton nappies are far better for a baby’s sensitive and delicate skin. Disposable nappies are made of superabsorbent chemicals, plastics, paper pulp and adhesives whilst real nappies are made mainly from natural fabrics/fibres. This aids in keeping nappy rash to a minimum. Cotton nappies are soft, breathable and lightweight.

Cotton nappies have advanced greatly in recent years to meet the needs of modern day parents. Reusable nappies of today have no complicated folds and come complete with Velcro or popper fastening. The cotton used has been designed for ease when washing and no soaking is required.

The development of cotton nappies has allowed for a range of different nappies to come onto the market. Here are the four main types:

Flat or prefold nappy - A rectangular shape made from cotton which needs a quick fold and is then placed inside a separate waterproof wrap - the wrap does not need to be changed at every nappy change time. Attributes are: slim fitting, quick drying and good value.

Shaped nappy – These do not require any folding. Simply close and place it inside the waterproof wrap. The wrap does not need to be changed every time you change the nappy, unless it is soiled. These are very easy to use with lots of fabrics to choose from. Some shaped nappies can be used from birth to potty training, making them very economical.

Pocket nappy - The waterproof outercover has a fleece layer on the inside with a gap left at the top between the fleece and the waterproof. Into this gap you place the absorbent pad, also known as an insert. As the pad is inside the wrap you need to change the waterproof at every nappy change time. A very simple to use nappy and the fleece layer helps keep your baby's skin drier.

One size nappy - Many nappies are available in one size which will fit from birth to potty training (8-35lbs). A good option if you have more than one child in nappies. Both children can use the same nappy. One size nappies are very economical and simple.

About the Author:

Cotton Baby, stockists of easy to use <a href=" reusable">http://www.cottonbaby.co.uk/">reusable nappies. Refurbishing printer cartridges is becoming increasingly popular because of the low costs of refilling as well as the positive impact on the overall environment.

The Option to Refill Printer Cartridges

Printers have cartridges that store the ink and dispense it while something is being printed. Usually printers have two printer cartridges - one for printing in black and white and the other for printing in color. Most printer manufacturers supply cartridges as well. These cartridges have one or more compartments for storing ink, an electric contact and a chip for detecting the level of ink left in the cartridge. The cartridge of any printer, be it inkjet or laser, can be removed.

Once the ink in the cartridge is over, one has the choice of replacing the cartridge. This is the more expensive option. One could instead refill printer cartridges and get the same quality of output, while saving a significant amount of money. While the cost of buying a new printer cartridge is quite high, an existing cartridge can be refilled at nearly half that cost. This means huge savings for the printer user. Not only this, every cartridge can be refilled four to five times, depending on the level of use, the quality of the printer and the condition of the cartridge.

Turn Environment Friendly: Refill Printer Cartridges

To refill printer cartridges is considered as an environment friendly option, since refurbishing reduces the number of cartridges being disposed and supports recycling. Each printer cartridge takes more than 3 liters of oil to be manufactured, apart from aluminum and steel. You can refill printer cartridges and save these nonrenewable resources. Moreover, most of the printer cartridges that are disposed add to landfill sites and take more than 450 years to decompose, since the plastic and other materials used are not biodegradable.

How to Refill Printer Cartridges

One should be careful in selecting the company to refill printer cartridges. While there are many online vendors advertising for this, one must trust only a reputed company. Moreover, one can consider bulk order discounts, money back guarantees and doorstep delivery while making the decision.

One company that has made a mark in providing this service isCartridge World. Founded more than a decade back, this company is today a leading provider of cartridge refilling services. You save hundreds of dollars if you do not have to pay your electricity bill. This should help you to kick start making your own electricity using renewable energy resources from your backyard. The whole process is not as complex or complicated as you may think; any one can get it done if one puts their mind to it. There are home energy kits available to give you step by step instructions to guide you through, you find them explaining things in very simple words, giving you the feeling of holding your hands and guiding you along.

The second reason is the most important of all because creating power on your own with renewable energy is great for the environment. With power generated from renewable energy there is no air pollution, noise pollution and any emission hazards. As it is, our environment is getting polluted day by day due to the present energy resources and its wastes. Creating our own energy may let us do our bit to zero in on environmental pollution and health hazards. The renewable energy usage also helps to prevent global warming and so protect our environment from that too.

The third reason why we should create our own energy is for the fun of it. When we make our own energy it can be interesting as well as fun activity, which will leave us feeling creative as well as making a big achievement. If you feel you are not technically sound enough with such activities then you may get a home energy kit and get your electrician to set it up accordingly for you.

The fourth and interesting reasoning would be the money you save on your electric Bill may be used elsewhere. There might have been things you have wanted and postponed buying, just because you have to pay your electric bill. So when you make your own electricity whatever you save on the electric bill can be used to spend on more important things and necessities.

The fifth reason would be of getting to know the great feeling of being able to create your own energy which you might have never felt possible. Just try making your own electricity and find out for yourself how that makes you feel when you get the lights burning. It would always be a pleasure for you to know that you made it possible to electrify your home on your own. It is unlike any other feeling when you do it yourself.

The sixth reason is that, it is actually a simple job. Once you get to know how to create your own energy it will feel like child's play to you. There are fully illustrated instruction manuals available with the home energy kits that make the whole process an easy job.

Last but not the least, it is not really expensive. You may make your own electricity for your needs from your backyard for an investment of less than $200. Wow! That sounds great doesn't it?

Bottled Water is bad for the Planet! What’s the Alternative?

The Bottled Water industry is now a 15.5 Billion dollars business in the US alone. But have you ever thought about what drinking all that bottled water does to the planet? Here’s a little food for thought.

Americans toss 38 billion water bottles into landfills every year! That’s 2.7 million tons of plastic, taking about 1000 years to degrade. Bottles that are incinerated produce toxic byproducts such as chlorine gas entering the air, and ash containing heavy metals enters the soil.

Manufacturing the water bottles necessary to meet Americans' demand for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually. Just think: that is enough energy to fuel about 100,000 cars for a year, running up demand for oil. In addition, more clean water is wasted in the production of the bottle than the bottle holds while a sixth of the world has no access to potable water.

Each week here in the US we are moving 1 billion bottles of water around in ships, trains, and trucks. That is a weekly convoy equivalent to 37,800 18-wheelers burning up fossil fuels just to deliver water! (Water weighs 8 1/3 pounds a gallon. It's so heavy you can't fill an 18-wheeler with it--you have to leave empty space.)

The Alternative? So simple!
• For your Bottled water needs for water coolers or crocks, filter your tap water where you use it with a high quality water filter such as PureCool. Not only is this choice a blessing for the planet – it will save you lots of cash to boot!
• Install a quality water filter under your sink. This provides the safest water and costs far less than bottled water or pitcher/canister type filters. The best one I’ve found is Legacy 105 which lasts a full year without giving it another thought. It has the highest flow rate on the market and only costs a couple of pennies per gallon.
• The best choice of all is a whole house filter. With this choice, not only do you “Break the Bottled Water Habit,” but you eliminate chemical absorption through your skin - making you feel and look better! An added bonus from this choice is that your water-using appliances will last up to 50% longer, meaning your filter pays for itself is savings. Be careful to choose a filter such as the SMF Whole House water filter that takes care of chloramines and health related contaminants such as cysts and VOCs.
• Get yourself a good reusable stainless steel personal water bottle (or 2 or 3) and refill the same bottles every day. There are extremely light and durable ones available now that can last you a decade! New Wave has the best value I’ve found. It‘s a great investment, again, saving you thousands of dollars over the life of the bottle.

None of these alternatives requires you to give up a thing – in fact they are money savers. Yet each one will have an enormous impact on the planet if each of us does our part!

About The Author-- Donna Hoffman is the owner of ezClearwater.com, provider of the highest quality, earth-friendly water purification products for home, office, pool and spa. You can probably hear it and see it everywhere you go today. Many people believe that recycling is hard to do. We tend to do what is easy and taking a few extra steps to recycle is not easy. So instead of recycling we tend to go the easy route and just throw everything away. But that should not be the case. There are a lot of innovative ways to recycle today. There are new products that seem to be coming out daily that are trying to make it easier to recycle.

The recycle tips out there can be categorized from easy to hard in terms of how easy it is to fit it into your lifestyle. Since most people believe it is hard to recycle, they tend to ignore the recycle tips they are given. One of the easiest ways to recycle would be to use a reusable water bottle. Millions of water bottles are in landfills today because people think it is easier and more convenient to use the disposable bottles. Another easy to do recycle tip would be to buy recycled products. The idea of recycling is to be able to reuse the material and eliminate waste and the need to use more virgin materials.

A few recycle tips that take just a little space in your house would be to reuse old birthday cards and Christmas cards by making them into homemade postcards. It will save you money and allow you to keep in touch with friends and family. Another recycle tip that uses everyday objects is to reuse your fabric softener sheets.

You can reuse them by putting them in your clothes drawers, to clean the lint of the dryer screen, wipe pet hair off of the furniture or eliminate static cling in skirts by rubbing it on your pantyhose. Another way to use old newspaper is to wet it and clean your windows with it. The ink from the newspaper is a great cleaning solution. It gives the newspaper a second use before you recycle it and it will save you money.

Recycle tips are not meant to make things harder on your lifestyle. If anything they are meant to make things easier and more cost effective to be included into you lifestyle. By incorporating just a few recycle tips a month into your daily routine, you might find that it is not as hard to recycle as you thought and you might be surprised at how much money it might save you in the long run.
Author Resource:- Curt Roese is the author and is a Real Estate Broker holding the EcoBroker and NAR GREEN Designations. Even if drying your clothes outside is particularly difficult in the United Kingdom with so few sunny and dry days.
There are currently three types of tumble dryers used in the United Kingdom which are the electric venting tumble dryer, the electric condensing and finally the gas tumble dryer. It seems that the most energy efficient one is actually the gas tumble dryer. Sadly though only few of those are being produced and sold here.
For information, a condenser tumble dryer will collect water and you will then have to empty it, whereas a vented tumble dryer will have a hose that leads the hot air out of the home and need to be connected to an outlet in the wall with a vent installed on it.

Another way of saving energy is for example to buy tumble dryer spare parts like Bosch spares or Hotpoint spares when your tumble dryer is broken. By doing so you will not have to buy another tumble dryer and the life of yours will improve.

Whereas finding energy efficient fridges is becoming very easy, just as well as getting fridge spares like white knight spares or others, tumble dryers are not that good when it comes to energy saving and a lot of them tend to be in the C rating or even lower instead of A or B.
Interestingly, an A+ fridge used for twenty four hours a day will produce around 116 kg of CO2 but an A rated tumble drier used three times a week will generate around 160kg of CO2 per year, which is pretty high.

It is very important nowadays to consider the impact on the environment your appliances will have, so make sure you check everything before buying a tumble dryer, a fridge or anything else. A lot of those appliances can now be bought online and websites usually provide a lot of information. On top of that, a lot of appliances usually have plenty of different programmes with some of them being more energy efficient than others.

Article Source: http://www.articleset.com

Green Kitchen Guide to Energy Efficient Stove Cooktops

Green Kitchen Guide to Energy Efficient Stove Cooktops
Author: Sunny Miller

When it comes to designing a green kitchen, evaluating stove cooktops for their energy efficiency can cause you to make a decision between convenience or your preferred method of cooking and being eco-friendly. But, if you really want to conserve energy and help to reduce your carbon footprint, your stove cooktop is something you need to consider in your kitchen design.

Unless you are going to cook in your fireplace over an open flame, you've got to consider the energy usage of the model of stove or cooktop that you buy. Most cooks prefer a gas cook top. With gas, the heat is easier to control and this can make cooking a lot easier.

However, gas stoves are powered by natural gas which is a fossil fuel and, as we know, fossil fuels are not that environmentally friendly. On the other hand, the electricity that powers electric cook tops comes mainly from coal burning power plants which, once again, are not that environmentally friendly. So, what's an environmentally sympathetic cook to do?

When it comes right down to it, choosing stoves and cooktops that are practical and good for the environment boils down to one thing - the efficiency of energy usage.

Which Stove Cooktops Are Most Energy Efficient?

When looking for energy efficiency, the electric cooktops are going to beat the gas ones hands-down. They are simply more efficient, so if the environment is tops on your list, go with electric.

But, there are many different types of electric cooktops that you'll need to evaluate for your green kitchen. In today's electric cooktops, there are many choices between the surface elements. These include induction elements, halogen elements and the traditional electric coil that seemed to be almost old-fashioned today. Each of these has it's advantages and disadvantages and they are not all equal when it comes to energy efficiency.

Needless to say, the newer technology cooktops are going to be more costly but they will also be more energy-efficient. The induction stove is the most energy-efficient because it transfers energy electromagnetically right to your pan. Of course, these are the highest priced.

The ceramic glass cooktops that use halogen elements are the next best when it comes to using energy, however if you don't have very flat pans, you will be wasting energy because they do not work efficiently if there isn't good pan to cooktop contact.

The least expensive - the electric coils are also the least energy-efficient not to mention the least attractive so please cross these right off your list when shopping for new cooktops for your kitchen!

When considering stove cooktops for your kitchen, you're going to have to weigh your budget with your desire to lower your carbon footprint. Just like most things in life, you have to compromise to achieve your goals. Going with a higher-priced and more efficient model might cost you more upfront but can save on your energy expense as well as your impact to the environment over time.
About the Author:
To find out more about which stove cooktops are more energy efficient as well as get more tips for an eco-friendly green kitchen, visit the Green Kitchen Design Guide.
Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/home-improvement-articles/green-kitchen-guide-to-energy-efficient-stove-cooktops-725233.html

Sew Your Own Reusable Shopping Bag or Tote

Sew Your Own Reusable Shopping Bag or Tote
Author: Di Ellis

It's very easy to make your own reusable shopping bag or tote. All you need is some sturdy fabric (such as heavy duty calico) and some cotton webbing or braid for the handles.

Suitable Fabrics & Notions

As noted above, you should choose a sturdy fabric such as heavy duty cotton or calico. To make one bag you'll need half a yard of fabric (assuming the fabric width is 43" or more). For metric sewers, you'll need ½ metre of fabric if the fabric is at least 106cm wide.

It may also be worthwhile to invest in some quality thread, as you may be carrying some heavy items in your bag, and you cannot afford to have your bag break due to cheap quality thread!

For the handles, I recommend cotton webbing or braid about 1" wide (2.5 cm). You'll need 48" of the webbing (or 122 cm).

To Make Your Pattern

There are only 5 pieces to cut out. 2 rectangles form the bag's front and back, there is one long piece that joins the front and back (to give the bag depth), and then 2 pieces for your handles.

Lay your fabric face down, and then draw out your rectangles as follows:

Bag sides (you'll need 2 of these) 13½" wide by 14½" tall (this gives a ½" seam allowance). In metric, this is 2 rectangles 34cm by 36cm (with a 1cm seam allowance).

Then you'll need long rectangle measuring 42½" by 5½" (or 106cm by 12cm).

Lay them out as shown in this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-layout.gif and then cut out.

Take your webbing and cut 2 handles each 24" long (or 61cm).

To Make Up

Basically, the long piece of fabric needs to be sewn along three sides of each rectangle (as shown in this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-sew.gif). Place one rectangle along the side of the long piece (right sides together) and start sewing. Stitch slowly when turning the corners of the rectangle. I strongly recommend that you sew each seam twice for extra strength, especially at the corners.

Now attach your handles to the bag and sew on by sewing a rectangle, then sew a cross in the middle (see this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-handles.gif). Again, it would be wise to double stitch these seams.

It doesn't matter whether you attach the handles to the inside or the outside, it's up to you. And that's it. Very simple.

About the Author:

Diane Ellis has been sewing since she was very young and got her first sewing machine at 6 years old (albeit a miniature one!). The fact is going green is more than just not cutting down trees or driving less. There is a whole plethora of things that are considered “going green”. Here are five things you can do today to go green.
Buy Organic

In a nutshell organic foods are foods grown without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Breaking that down even further organic foods are also grown as part of a permiculture as opposed to a monoculture. A permiculture is farming where multiple varieties of vegetation are grown in the same area to maximize the soil, sun and compost. An example would be growing tomatoes next to sugar beets. A monoculture is farming where you grow just one type of vegetation in a field. The best example of this is a corn field. By going organic you are purchasing vegetation that does not use any means of chemicals. As the demand for non-organic foods goes down so will the need for chemicals. A lot of times organic foods are cheaper if they are grown locally.

Unplug

When items are not in use unplug them. Sounds simple right? Well you would be surprised at which appliances draw power that is not even in use. If you are not using an appliance unplug them to ensure that no power is being drawn. Not only does this help you go green by using less electric but will help you save some money as well.

Save Water

Even though water covers over 75% of the earth most of it is not drinkable. Therefore we must do our part to conserve the drinkable water that we do have. You can take a shower instead of a bath, make sure you do your laundry on the appropriate size setting, do not run the water while you brush your teeth or shave, to name a few. Again this is a tip that not only helps conserve water but will also save you some money.

Recycle

Sure this one is common sense since you more than likely recycle, paper, bottles, plastics and cans. But did you also know that you can recycle your food waste. The process of recycling your food waste is called composting. By burying your food waste (no steak bones) in a hole about 2 to 3 foot deep, what you are doing is supplying food to earthly creatures, i.e. worms, bacteria and fungi in the soil. When you do this their castings supply nutrients to the soil which creates an ideal growing environment for flowers, vegetables, trees and other plants. If you have a garden you should definitely give this a try.

Educate Yourself

Last but not least, but last for a reason is to familiarize yourself with what you can do in regards to going green. It can be as easy as doing a Google search on the Internet or reading a book from the library. Educating yourself will give you the tools you need to be successful in helping out your environment.

These are just 5 of the many ways you can participate in the art of going green. If you’re going solar, you need to know the components.

Solar Components

While generally considered electric platforms, solar systems definitely have unique components. Here’s some of the jargon you are going to need to be familiar with before buying.

1. Photovoltaic Cell – This is the key piece of any solar platform. Known as a PV cell, it is typically a small cell containing a silicon substance under glass. When the sun hits the cell, the silicon undergoes an electrical reaction that creates a charge. The charge is collected by small wires. Depending on the nature of the cell, each should produce roughly half a volt.

2. Solar Panel – A collection of solar cells joined as a unit in a frame. A single panel typically is insufficient to produce enough energy to power anything of significance in your home.

3. Solar System – Also known as a photovoltaic system, a solar system is an interconnected set of solar panels. This is what you see on the roofs of home or other areas around homes and buildings. A solar system converts enough sunlight into electricity to provide most or all of the power required by a home.

4. Orientation – Before installing a panel system, one has to give some thought regarding where to put it. The sun tracks across a structure in a particular way. To maximize the energy production, the panels have to be oriented to receive the maximum amount of sunlight. This, of course, results in the maximum amount of electricity.

5. Direct Current – A type of electricity that flows in only one direction. Solar cells produce direct current electricity.

6. Alternating Current – Electricity that flows in both directions. AC power is used by utilities and in practically all appliances and machines in a home.

7. Inverter – A key component in a solar panel system. The inverter converts the direct current produced by the solar panels into AC power that can be used in the home or fed back into a utility power grid system.

Obviously, there are a wide variety of systems for converting sunlight into power. Making yourself familiar with the above components is a good place to start.

Article Source: http://www.ArticlesandAuthors.com - THE Premier Site for Articles AND Authors

About this Article Author:

Rick Chapo is with SolarCompanies.com – a directory of solar energy companies. Almost every other thing is recycled these days. Recycling is an effective way to preserve the natural sources that have been used by us. Recycling can help in curbing the pollution that is causing a lot of upheaval in the living of the entire living organisms. Auto recycling is one such activity that helps in keeping the earth and atmosphere free from harmful chemicals. An California Auto Salvage company is the one which recycles the parts of the car which has the retainable quality and disposes the un-retainable parts in the safe way.

California is one of the populated cities of America. It is a city that has got plenty of such junk cars that are worn out and spoiling day by day the surroundings of the place. There are plenty of poisonous gasses that are emitted out of various spare parts of the car. Disposing these in the improper ways can cause a lot of damage therefore, it is essential that it is disposed by an California Auto-Salvage company.

An auto salvage company disposes off the battery fluid, brake fluid and so on in a way which is environment friendly. One of the good parts of these auto recycling company is that they tow your vehicle without charging a single penny and thus you can easily get rid of your useless vehicle which is soaring your eyes and can also help in making this earth a better place to live.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About the Author: I am an occupational content writer as wrting is my hobby and i enjoy wrting on various topics.

Running Your Car On Water - Environmentally Effective?

Some people talk about environmental factors associated with being able to run cars on water. In fact, hydrogen cars are listed as being totally emission free. This is because the only emission they release is water vapor.

HHO gas is used to completely replace the fuel or to replace part of the fuel within a vehicle. HHO gas is created when water undergoes a particular type of chemical change and that occurs at the time when electricity is added.

The first thing to consider is how much does your car, with its current gasoline-based engine, emit into the atmosphere? It depends on your vehicle, but tons of green house gases which poisons humans and destroys the environment by increasing global warming, are constantly released into the atmosphere.

By adding a hydrogen generator to your current vehicle, you can cut gas usage by 50-100%. This means that you can add half a tank to a full tank of gas for each fill up!

It does not take long to install a conversion kit (or even make one yourself) if you want to try out the benefits for yourself, and you can easily remove it if it does not meet your expectations when assisting you in providing a cleaner environment. Some people ask why they should bother considering the huge amounts of money spent and how can one single vehicle make a difference?

This may be true. One single vehicle might not make a huge impact, but it can and if you notice the difference and tell a few people, they will try it and tell a few more people, creating an enormous chain effect. Many people believe that one person alone cannot make a difference to help the environment.

But one person can definitely open the way for others to follow and replicate the same practices to save energy and preserve our environment. In the meantime, you get to enjoy saving lots of money and greatly increase your gas mileage without using hardly any gas.

Options for running a car on water are becoming more and more popular, not just because of environmental factors but also for the cost saving elements that are bringing countless people onto the idea of using HHO gas and hydrogen generators in their cars. They are easy to install, they are inexpensive when compared to the savings that can be had from them, and they use a renewable source that can be found anywhere for free.

When taking this into consideration and then adding to it the environmental factors, it is little wonder why the running a car on water idea is becoming very popular. There are many people who may pass up this opportunity, even if they want to do something for the environment because they do not believe that they can make a difference. Even one individuals single impact is well worth it when it comes to preserving our environment.

About the Author
Alan Largo is the creator and administrator of Half-Water Half-Gas and strives to assist others identify with their adverse gasoline situation through informative reviews. Recycle Them!

By: Bradlley Mckoy

Often, the heads of committees for corporate giveaways and gifts for employees run out of steam. Put yourself in their shoes and you will find that mass gift giving on a yearly basis can be a mind numbing experience, not to mention a daunting task considering that you have to find a gift that fits everybody, fits into the budget and fits in the pockets. So, they settle for mundane and recurring items like engraved pocket watches! Do you hear dismayed groans? Or is it just you?

But never worry. You can recycle these accumulated engraved pocket watches without a trace of guilt and without leaving a trace on your wallets.

Sell Them on eBay

Or any other selling sites you prefer. Do not think for a moment that nobody will take interest in these items, not when they are so common, so crass, and so cranky. Somebody, somewhere in the Internet universe will have use for them in ways you will tell yourself you should have thought about first. Who said regrets come before the action anyway?

But if you remain ignorant of these uses, then you will be selling these engraved pocket watches without a trace of remorse and with money on your wallet, to boot.

Sell Them in a Yard Garage Sale

Garage sales are curious things. You sell stuff you do not use and others buy your stuff they will have no use for either. Then again, many a valuable artwork has been discovered in the trash and in yard sales, which is not to say your corporate embossed pocket watches will be the next Patek Philippe that sold for $11 million dollars at Sotheby s in December 1999. You wish.

Give Them to Friends and Family

Your friends and family might have use for these watches, again in ways you never dreamed possible. Not to mention, absolutely ridiculous and borderline insane but do not let them hear you say that.

For example, take your relative who never goes out without his assortment of watches. He has one on his wrist, one on his cellphone, one in his suit pocket and one in his head. He will definitely appreciate your gifts of engraved pocket watches, never mind the corporate logo.

You might even have a friend who lives by the clock. Her life is ruled by a pre arranged schedule, deviations of which can send her into a frenzy. You can give her the atomic pocket watches so that she knows she is perfectly in sync with the rest of the universe s ticking clock.

Use Them as Decorations

Not on your body though unless you want to be a walking advertisement for your company and an easy target of the fashion police. You can string your unused engraved pocket watches all together and make a unique conversational decoration in your living room, a kind of mobile art piece. Do any artist proud, eh?

Or you can display those in the bathroom to remind your teenage daughter of the time she spends doing her thing while others are raring to do theirs.

When all else fails, you can always use your engraved pocket watches as bomb timers to remind the committees that

Yes, you are tired of these watches

No, you are not joking

Then again, why not just throw them away, right?

Author Resource:-> You will be loath to discard watches from the http://executivegiftshoppe.com/, especially the elegant Colibri pocket watch (http://www.executivegiftshoppe.com/pocket-watch-colibri.html) and the sturdy mechanical pocket watch (http://www.executivegiftshoppe.com/pocket-watch-silver-tone-mechanical.html). The term includes various activities all aimed at saving the planet and doing less environmental harm with our day to day life and activities.Part of the green living idea is using alternative methods for producing power such as using wind or solar power instead of traditional power plants. Advantages of wind power are numerous and we will mention some of the main ones in the following lines. The most obvious advantage is that wind power is totally free. Of course you should invest in building a power generator but still this is a minor investment compared to the bulky utility bills your household is getting every month. Moreover maintenance costs are pretty low – both time and money required for windmill upkeep.

Wind power generators are environmentally safe way to producing energy. They don’t pollute the air or water and they don’t need any kind of fuel to run. Moreover windmills don’t require large space top be built. In that sense they are convenient for garden of any size as well as very suitable for farming areas.Another huge advantage of wind power is that it is available in areas where central electricity is not available. Remote areas such as mountains or agricultural areas can still have their own power supply without being part of the electricity power grid.

Windmills are available is any size and for that reason they can supply with sufficient power any size of household. Of course to make this happen, wind speed and wind patters have to be taken into consideration too. Since we mentioned the main advantages of wind power, it is good to say something about the disadvantages too. Windmills are noisy and that is the main consideration for many household when they consider constructing windmill in their yard. Wind power turbines can sometimes interfere with nearby TVs and that is why many household are reluctant to using wind power as an alternative power supply source. Another significant disadvantage is that wind power is very dependant on weather conditions – power is produced only when there is wind with sufficient force. On the other hand stormy weather can seriously harm windmills.

Regardless of these drawbacks it is becoming more and clearer that private individual as well as large scale businesses are looking for cheaper and safer ways of producing energy. In this sense the advantages of wind power are much more than the drawbacks and it is expected that it will gain more and more popularity in the coming years.

About the author:
Earth4Energy is a guide that explains the steps to create electricity using wind power at Home. Not only do they take substantially longer to break down or degrade, but as they do they release highly toxic chemicals.

Other Plastics
Other types of plastic bags break down much faster and don't have to toxic byproduct issues that petroleum based polyethylene bags do. These bags are made from plastics that are derived from raw materials such as vegetable oils, starches and even cellulose which is made from wood pulp. Did you know that Cellophane kitchen wrap is made completely from substances derived from wood?

New Plastics Being Developed
As the science of chemistry advances, new plastics are being developed and older plastics formulas are being improved on. The result, is that newer alternatives to todays polyethylene plastic bags are being developed and tested. However; none so far has the strength and low manufacturing cost of polyethylene bags which remain the most popular.

The Search for a Solution
Another reason that polyethylene bags haven't been replaced by another type of plastic bag, is that each type of disposable material that bags can be made from presents it own environmental problems. Even going back to paper isn't a viable solution any more, due to the amount of water that is used in the paper manufacturing process. Also, there just aren't enough trees any more to supply the demand that would be created by going back to paper bags.

About the author:
Written by Tanya Faddelstein. Rather, it refers to any number of common substances flexible properties. The word “plastic” is derived from the Latin word “plastique”, which roughly translates into “to change” in English.Polyethylene Bags are Cheap to ManufacturePolyethylene bags have become popular, because they are cheap to manufacture and because polyethylene is made from petroleum, which up until recently was relatively inexpensive. Other plastics that other bags and wrapping products are made from are derived from substances such as vegetable oil and even wood pulp, which is more expensive.

Ecological Issues
The ecological problems that arise out of the use of polyethylene bags manifest themselves when the bags themselves are improperly disposed of. While environmentalist point up the fact that they take up to a thousand years to decompose when they are buried the real problem comes from the fact that as litter blowing in the wind, they can take a very long time to degrade.

The Search for a SolutionWhile some people claim that a return to paper bags may be a solution to the problem, paper in itself, has its ecological downsides. For instance, paper uses a lot of water and energy when being processes from wood pulp. Also, a return to paper bags would be devastating on the worlds forests, which are already under pressure from commercial interests.

About the author:
Written by Tanya Faddelstein. Easy Solutions to Global Warming at our Fingertips

With so much information out there about global warming and the effects that are causing natural disasters, is there anything we as individuals can do to make a difference? Yep! You don't need to move mountains, but a small pebble can really make ripples that can create positive changes world wide. Here's a few "pebbles" you can use today! We all feel we have a purpose in life. As more of us become aware of the damaging effects of global warming, we are also concerned about practical solutions to the problem. Most importantly, how can we fit in as part of the solution, instead of the problem?

Unfortunately, many of us become overwhelmed when we watch the ever-increasing natural disasters and it starts to feel like the world is crashing around us. I remember watching the plane hit the World Trade Center over and over and over again. I remember being completely paralyzed to the television. Sleep was optional, but only in between important news breaks. I felt helpless. I wanted to understand the reasoning behind the attacks to ease my fears of possible future attacks, but I mainly wanted a sense of control back into my life.

I do not like to focus on the doom of global warming because that's not the best mindset for me to find solutions and implement actions. I truly believe we all can make a difference in our lives, in the lives of our families, friends and community. I also am a firm believer that every single action taken produces a ripple effect throughout the world. When we take a simple action such as changing a light bulb to a compact fluorescent bulb, a positive motion is set in place. Just for fun, let's see what can happen: (this will show how the action affects others) That old bulb in the living finally goes out. You go to your local hardware store and see miles of shelves of light bulbs! OY! (production of CFL bulbs)o Someone comes over to help and maybe suggest a CFL. "A what?" you ask. The assistant tells you that even though the bulb is more expensive than a basic tungsten bulb, it will last years longer, it will not burn hot, uses way less energy, thus saving you money every month AND prevents the release of more than 450 pounds of emission from a power plant normally used to light the old style bulbs into the air! (increased sales and more potential advertisement of a green product, decreased amount of carbons released into the atmosphere) You read the advertisement and glimpse the familiar EnergyStar sign. So, you think, "Why not!" (increased awareness of a great program)o You go home and your kids ask you about the funny looking bulb. (educates the kids and tell their friends how smart their parents are!) Your friends come over for dinner and recognize the bulb, but never really considered buying one until now. (increased awareness through word-of mouth [extremely powerful!!!] and more potential sales, advertisement, decreased emissions) You get the electric bill the next month and notice you really did use less electricity AND saved a little money. ($$$) You go to buy more CFL bulbs and realize the prices dropped a bit due to increased sales! (supply and demand of a product that improves our world)

That's just for changing one bulb! Just one action really can make an impact. Just because we do not always see the immediate results don't mean they aren't there! So what are the best solutions of global warming? Can we help save the world? Yep. I would first suggest do whatever feels right for you. The level of comfort will be different for everyone. To me, it can be summed up as: AWARENESS and ACTION AWARENESSMy first exposure to environmental issues came about while working at Home Depot. I watch as a person chained himself to our lumber shelves and awaited the local police. His actions, maybe a bit extreme to some, created awareness to the customers, Home Depot and the media. Many of those same actions ultimately changed the way Home Depot purchased and sold lumber.

For me, my level of comfort was turning off the lights. The more I learned, the more I did to help the environment. Learning about basic, easy-to-do home repairs really made a difference and increased my confidence as well as the confidence of my customers. Now, years later, I must say living in Thailand has taught me a lot about saving energy as well as joining together for what you believe in. I've seen Thais go to the employment office and march because wages were too low. I have witnessed the ousting of a political figure because the Thais felt betrayed. I have greater respect for Thais and for others I've met from different countries. Their views and actions have taught me so much about global warming. I also have greater appreciation for our abilities as Americans to make changes worldwide. So to further answer people's question - "What are the best solutions to global warming?" My suggestions are all easy to do, but the main factor lies with what is comfortable for you. If I am given a great idea, but is too time-intensive, I probably won't do it. But if it's as easy as hitting the enter key, now you got my attention!
Ok. We are much more aware of what's going on. We understand we have a problem. Now what!

ACTION
I started with small steps. As I learned more, I found the bigger steps easier than I realized. I discussed my views with others and listened to their ideas. My friends in Alabama recently installed solar heaters and a tankless water heater. Businesses are seeing the advantages of doing the right thing and stepping up their environmental cleaning efforts People from all walks of life have created petitions requesting a more proactive government. Even the 2008 Presidential Candidates are listening. Many are now including global warming as their primary issue. Need some ideas to get your creative green juices flowing? OK! Here you go! Enjoy!o Get the family involved - make it fun and educational. Make it a project during your child's science fair. Chat with your friends - they may have some unique ideas. Add a signature tag to your emails. I have a personal account with Yahoo. Whenever I send someone an email, my signature message or quote is at the end of the page. I create the signature once and forget about it. If you see a quote you like or have a message to share with others - signature it! Find out what tax incentives or refunds are available to you, i.e. hybrid car tax incentives, toilet replacement rebates, deduct the costs of energy-saving appliances and energy renovations in your home. Support greener businesses. Our money dictates what businesses sell. Our support encourages businesses to continue doing the right thing. o Want to invest in the stock market? What companies are moving forward in clean-up? Researching new technologies? Contributing portions of their profits to support environmental organizations? Vote. What candidates are fighting for positive changes in the environment? Who seems to be making global warming a primary focus in their campaign? How does the candidate balance global warming and the economy?

Does the candidate understand the threat and what solutions does he or she offer? Join others online and become a part of something bigger. In the past, petitions involved going door-to-door or standing near the mall entrance. Thanks to the internet, a letter to Congress has never been easier - or more effective! Read the letter already prepared. If you agree with it, type your name and hit ENTER ! Submit your ideas to websites. I would love input from you! Your ideas can be just what someone else needed! Many websites would also benefit from your thoughts and appreciate the communication! Start a discussion group in your community. Barnes and Noble or Borders are excellent meetings spots. It's a great way to meet others and bounce around ideas. Help improve your neighborhood. In Tampa, there's a wonderful community group that has a Project Lottery. Each participant chooses a project they need completed on their house. A name is pulled every month. The neighbors spend one weekend on the project. The lucky owner provides drinks and snacks to the neighbors volunteering. Create a website of your own! Everyone has a voice. Today, websites are effective communicators and very inexpensive. Get the kids or the community involved. Let your voice be heard too!
Source: Free Articles

About the Author
As a writer, teacher and founder of http://www.citizens-stop-globalwarming.com , Helena Jackson is constantly trying to find simple and easy ways to make a difference in the world. We moms are already busy and many of us feel stressed out and tired. The thought of adding something new to the routine is overwhelming. That, coupled with discouraging reports from the media that claim it all doesn't matter, can cause many a mom to just give up. Yet I think most of us have a nagging sense that we're going to be forced to change at some point in the future. We're all concerned about what kind of air, soil and water our kids are going to inherit.

My feelings on the matter are this: Baby Step it.
There are plenty of changes you can implement, one at a time that add up to a big difference over time. And the changes build on themselves. Isn't it true that once we start a new routine, it seems like a big deal at first, but then we hardly notice it? Here are some ideas of things you can do right now to Baby Step your way to a greener life. I'll borrow the Three R's to illustrate.

1) ReplaceAs I mentioned, going green doesn't mean going out and buying all new stuff. While hemp t shirts are all well and good, throwing out your kid's wardrobe isn't exactly eco friendly. Neither is selling your perfectly good car to buy a hybrid. Think in terms of replacing stuff as it wears out with a better alternative. As an example, I had family in town last week an with the hustle and bustle and extra bodies, I managed to lose the charger to my cellphone. Instead of replacing it with another plug in charger, I'm buying a solar charger. As your lightbulbs die out, replace them with CFLs or LEDs. The next time you have to repaint your home, choose No VOC paints. When your favorite cleaning product wears out, keep the bottles and the all purpose dilutable cleaner from the Clorox Green Works line. It's inexpensive and very effective. I use it for everything from kitchen counters and toilets to mopping the floor.

2) RemindPutting reminders on your calender. For example, put "check tire pressure" on your calendar once a month. You'll burn less gas and save money too. What about reminding yourself to make a once a week trip to the recycling center instead of letting your recyclables pile up, tempting you to toss them instead? You can also do a yearly check up of your home: see if any of your toilets or faucets are leaking water, and check the seals on your refrigerator.

3) RethinkPart of going green is giving a little more mindfulness about your day to day decisions, especially about what you bring into your home. For instance, if you're planning a party, do you have to buy disposable plates and napkins? Why not use cloth napkins and real plates instead? They're far more elegant. When your computer wears out, instead of just tossing it, take it to Staples and have them recycle it. Or have a tech savvy teenager sell the parts on eBay.
I did this once and made almost as much money on the parts as the computer cost new!

Keeping these 3 principles in mind will help you "baby step" your way to a greener lifestyle. Making gradual changes that stick is the ticket here. Enjoy the process!

Excuse the e-waste

Become an informed e-Cycler in four simple steps.

We have e-mail, e-government, eBay. Stick and e- in front of any word and it can become new do-com slang, referring to the expanding terminology for all things tech. So add this to the list: e-Cycling. Environmentalists and techies alike define e-Cycling as the same old "reduce, reuse, recycle" catch phrase, but for electronics. Got e-waste? E-Cycle it.

There are very few downsides to e-Cycling. Recycling electronics will reduce greenhouse gases, the equivalent of taking more than 30,000 cars off the road each year in the United States, according to the Environment Protection Agency. It also may create space in your home office or attic. And you can pay it forward with programs that take donated equipment and give it to low-income families, nonprofits and schools.
Consider if you really use the 10-year-old desktop computer gathering dust in the spare bedroom. Or did you toss your old cell phone into a desk drawer instead of giving it back to the phone company? About two in 10 comsumers have an unused phone or computer, and that same number was estimated to have thrown the gadgets into the trash, according to a 2006 survey by consumer reports. With a few pointers, e-Cycling can be simple and rewarding.

Step 1: Chase the Arrows
The three R's - reduce, reuse, recycle- should be considered in that order. Recycling is the last alternative. Scrutinize your e-consumption and see if you can reduce the number of products that contain hazardous materials. Then move on to reuse. Gauge whether purchasing a new computer or printer is necessary or if the equipment can be updated instead. Then, if reducing and reusing your electronics aren't possible, recycling comes in.

Step 2: Directions, Please
The dumpster is not a good place to start. E-waste needs to be discarded differently than other trash, or it will end up clogging landfills and releasing mercury, lead and other toxic substances into the air and water. So know before you go.
About 90 percent of a computer's contents can be recycled, according to GreenerChoices.org, a nonprofit that urges consumers to go green. Check out these e-Cycling companies, whose Web sites offer drop-off locations.

For local listings, go to eiae.org

for an eco-event calendar and directory called "Act Locally," go to Earth911.com

For an energy calculator, go to mygreenelectronics.org

for information about rechargeable batteries and cell phones, go to rbrc.org

Also, most electronics retailers collect e'waste in specially placed drop-off boxes. Some even provide prepaid mailing labels so you can ship a computer or tv from home, free. And a few cell phone retailers will credit your account if you donate a functioning cell phone.

Step 3: Ask Questions

Once you pick a place, make sure your e-waste is properly disposed. Consider asking these questions:

How do th ey destroy personal data that may still be on a cell phone or computer?

Are they a full-service recycler? most service providers are not; they take in products but send them to another location to fully process your waste. Ask.

Have they violated any major environmental codes?

What is their rate of recycled-versus-disposed material? the electronics Industry Alliance suggests choosing a company that recycles at least 90 percent of the materials it collects, which leaves very little e-waste.

Step 4: Be Proactive

the hardest part may be loading up a bulky applianace and taking it in. Here's some incentive: Student groups like Silicon Valley's StRUT program (students recycling Used Technology) have placed nearly 5,000 free computers in schools. In one month alone, computers were donated to a senior citizens' housing complex in Tennessee, families received free computers in Vermont and inmates in Ohio are using the processors for GED programs- the fruits of just one nonprofit, The National Cristina Foundation.

Businesses are begging for your old stuff. Think green, and consider a new place for your e-waste.
